Football: Running of the Bulls - Exeter stampedes Woodlake
Updated: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 10:42 AM PDT

In the 94 previous years that Woodlake and Exeter have played football against each other, you could probably recall that at one time or another almost anything has happened.

Friday night, football is what happened.

The two teams entered the Valencia Bowl with the idea that the Running of the Bulls sounded like a good title for the game. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Monarchs certainly proved early what their game plan was. Cameron Loeffler carried on the first play for 12 yards. On the second play from scrimmage with 11:41 on the clock, Loeffler ran 63 yards for an Exeter touchdown.

Woodlake, operating in the Wing-T, came out running when they received the kickoff, though they were forced to punt their first possession. The Monarchs again ran the ball, this time down to the three yard line before fumbling and Woodlakeís Ray Salazar recovered the ball. Though this time the Tigers ran with success, eventually they were forced to punt.

On Exeterís next play Loeffler ran right for a 48 yard gain to the two yard line. On the next play he crossed the goal line for another Exeter score and with 5:48 left in the first quarter the Monarchs were ahead 14-0.

From that point both teams settled in to a run, run, run, punt series for the remainder of the first quarter and the majority of the second. With 4:33 left in the second quarter the Monarchs started down the field from their 27 yard line and on a combination of runs by Loeffler, David Herrera, J.C. Totty and culminated with an Andrew Anderson eight yard run for a touchdown with 1:49 left on the clock.

The rest of the second quarter was uneventful except for a double penalty that started as a double ejection, but the call was changed to double unsportsman-like penalties. The first half ended with Exeter ahead 21-0.

The second half saw the Tigers start to pass more and with 9:35 left in the third quarter Woodlake started down the field with a combination of passed and runs. The drive culminated with a two yard run for a touchdown by Daniel Rodriguez.

Exeter responded with another drive, sustained by a 17 yard run by Herrera, and Loeffler crossed the goal line for an Exeter touchdown with 3:00 left in the third quarter. At 6:10 in the fourth quarter , Loeffler scored his fourth touchdown of the night.

Coach Ben White credited the offensive line for the 377 rushing yards. ìThe offensive line played great.î White added that next weekís game with Taft is a ìmajor test.î For the Monarchs, Loeffler ended with 252 yards on 27 carries rushing and David Herrera added 61 on 6 carries.

Woodlake was led by quarterback Matt McMillan with 65 yards rushing on 15 carries and completing 8 passes for 126 yards. Coach Scott Hernandez noted that the Tigers expected to run more, but were ìforced to passî after falling behind.
